Odisha Cold Wave: IMD Issues Yellow Warning for Severe Conditions

Odisha is reeling under an intense cold wave, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow warning for Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, and Angul, indicating the possibility of severe cold wave conditions over the next 24 hours. The chilling temperatures continue to disrupt daily life across the state, while forecasts suggest limited relief in the coming days.

Cold Wave Grips Odisha

  • G. Udayagiri recorded the state’s lowest temperature at 6.6°C among hill stations, while Jharsuguda and Rourkela registered a freezing 6.8°C, with the latter experiencing the lowest visibility of just 50 meters due to dense fog.
  • Capital Bhubaneswar and nearby Cuttack recorded minimum temperatures of 13°C and 11.5°C, respectively, making urban areas notably chilly.

IMD Forecast Highlights

  • IMD Bhubaneswar, represented by meteorologist Sanjeev Dwivedi, predicts light rainfall across isolated pockets in Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, and Koraput districts on December 17.
  • The minimum temperatures are expected to remain stable for two more days, offering little reprieve. A rise of 3-5°C may occur after this period in certain regions, but the cold wave conditions will persist until then.

Impact of the Cold Wave

Similipal National Park in Mayurbhanj district recorded 3°C, marking the coldest temperature in Odisha this winter. Despite sunny weather, the intense chill and clear skies have exacerbated the situation. The unyielding cold wave has thrown daily activities into disarray, especially in districts under the yellow warning.

Key Measures to Stay Safe During Odisha’s Cold Wave

  • Wear layered clothing: Focus on thermal insulation to trap body heat.
  • Avoid early morning outings: The temperatures are at their lowest during early hours; plan accordingly.
  • Stay hydrated: Cold temperatures can mask dehydration.
  • Maintain ventilation indoors: Proper air circulation prevents indoor dampness and related illnesses.
