In a tragic incident in Ramagiri village, located in the R. Udayagiri block of Gajapati district, Odisha, two minor girls lost their lives, while two other family members are battling for survival after consuming ‘sattu’ provided by the Anganwadi center.
Details of the Incident
The deceased have been identified as Tulsi Badamundi (6) and Gunabati Badamundi (3). The two critically ill members include Arjun Badamundi (father) and another minor girl from the same family.
According to reports, the family fell ill shortly after consuming roasted gram flour (sattu), distributed at the Hatpada Anganwadi Center. They experienced severe pain and vomiting, prompting their immediate admission to the Ramagiri Primary Health Center (PHC) on Sunday afternoon.
Rapid Deterioration of Health
Doctors at Ramagiri PHC provided initial treatment but later referred Tulsi and Gunabati to Parlakhemundi District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) due to their worsening condition. Unfortunately, Tulsi succumbed before reaching the hospital, while Gunabati died during treatment at the DHH.
Medical Expert’s Statement
Dr. Brajaraj Kar, a medical officer at Ramagiri PHC, provided insights into the medical condition of the children.
“Both children were brought in a serious condition. They were suffering from shortness of breath and rapid heartbeat. Despite our immediate medical efforts, their health deteriorated quickly. We arranged for their transfer to Parlakhemundi DHH, but sadly, one girl passed away on the way, and another during treatment.”
Current Condition of Other Family Members
The two surviving family members were later shifted to Berhampur, where they continue to receive critical medical care. Their condition remains serious.
Investigation Underway
Following the incident, local authorities and police officials have launched an investigation. The batch of sattu suspected to be contaminated has been seized, and forensic analysis is underway to determine the cause of contamination and prevent such incidents in the future.
Role of ASHA Worker
A local ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) worker played a crucial role in alerting authorities about the deteriorating health of the victims. The ASHA worker also assisted in hospital admissions and emergency response efforts.
Concerns Over Food Safety in Anganwadi Centers
This unfortunate event raises serious concerns about food safety and quality control in Anganwadi centers. Many pregnant women, lactating mothers, and young children rely on these centers for their nutritional needs. Stringent quality checks and hygiene protocols must be enforced to prevent food contamination and safeguard public health.
